Vanity Metrics Are Killing Your Growth: Here's What to Track Instead

Impressions, reach, follower counts, engagement rate. They look great in a slide deck. An agency can hand you a report full of charts trending up and to the right, and you can feel like marketing is working — right up until you check the bank statement and find nothing has actually changed.

These are vanity metrics, and the reason they're dangerous isn't that they're fake. The numbers are real. The problem is that none of them tell you whether the business made more money. A post can get thousands of impressions from people who were never going to buy anything from you. Reach can grow while revenue stays completely flat. These metrics measure attention, not outcome, and attention is cheap to manufacture.

The shift that actually changes things is tying every marketing number to a number further down the funnel. Not “how many people saw this,” but “how many of the people who saw this became a lead, and how many of those leads became a paying customer.” That's a much less flattering chart most of the time — which is exactly why so few businesses build it.

In practice, this means tracking a short list instead of a long one: leads generated, cost per lead, lead-to-client conversion rate, and revenue per client. Everything else — the impressions, the reach, the follower growth — can stay on the dashboard as context, but it should never be the headline metric a marketing decision gets made on.

If your agency's monthly report leads with engagement and impressions and buries (or omits) leads and revenue, that's worth asking about directly. The report isn't lying to you. It's just measuring the part of the job that's easiest to make look good, instead of the part that actually pays your bills.
